Drew Altizer Photography
Drew Altizer Photography is a full-service San Francisco photography agency. Drew's entire team are experts in events, portraits, video, PR and media placement and shoot events all over SF and beyond. Their true passion is event photography and if you have been to a big event around the Bay Area or California, there is a great chance Drew's team is there. Drew found Spiral Scout based on our work with Cutcaster which was the stock photo marketplace that SpiralScout's CEO had created in 2007. Drew was on a legacy platform that wasn’t able to scale with his business and he was losing sales daily. He also didn't have the internal technical resources to build a project of this size himself.
The Scope of the Project
Drew needed a web development company in San Francisco to build a new website to organize photographs and distribute them to the press, guests at parties, and clients. He also wanted to allow his website visitors to purchase digital downloads or order prints from a printing service he was using in the Bay Area. Spiral Scout started the project out by drafting a technical review document that outlined the entire scope of the project. We worked closely with Drew to articulate his vision and business goals. Using that document as the blueprint, Spiral Scout assigned a project manager, a designer, and three engineers to build out the responsive website according to the spec. The fully customized site included an internal digital asset manager, a distribution system for clients and the media, e-commerce functionality for purchases, a collaborative editing workspace for clients, editors and photographers, a customer relationship management tool, and detailed sales reporting. Drew also needed a way for his photo editors and media clients (those who were asking him to shoot events or buy the images from the events) to edit and tag images in real time while working in different locations, so they could send images to their end clients and guests. We spec’ed out the collaboration tool and delivered a solution under budget and within time based on a clear spec and client feedback.
An additional challenge for our team was how we wanted to deal with and migrate over Drew's existing photos and metadata, as well as some of the other difficult features that Drew was asking for. To that point, every developer Drew had used struggled to come up with a long-term solution that would organize all his digital assets. Spiral Scout took on the challenge and succeeded. We essentially built four websites into one web application. The first application was a digital asset manager for their internal use as well as a distribution system to the media outlets they service. Next, we built a website just for guest that visited his website which has a search and e-commerce component. Finally, we designed and developed a system of media delivery that Drew's could use to send files to his clients.
Drew was asked over at Clutch, "What did you find most impressive about Spiral Scout?" He said, "Their strength is in understanding and realizing solutions to problems. They’re very smart and curious about problem-solving. They find the best solution for the problem instead of just finding the easiest way to solve the problem. My experience with three other developers has been that they’ve said they could solve our problems but couldn’t deliver on their promise. Spiral Scout is honest, and if they can’t do it, they will tell me."
